TV Character

Here is a character that Pepomo have been working on for the launch of PITV (PROPELLER ISLAND TELEVISION) at Supermarket 2011, Kulturhuset, Stockholm, Sweden: 17th – 20th February 2011. We have been trying to come up with a name for this cheeky flying television, but as of yet we have not found the right one. Any ideas?

Shooting The Documentary

Today we were involved in a video shoot for a Propeller Island documentary which will be shown at Supermarket 2011, Kulturhuset, Stockholm, Sweden. A fake beard and sunglasses were worn to diguise appearance due to my shyness, although it made one more conspicuous! We are not sure how it will turn out, and we very much looking forward to it!

By the way, the photo was taken in the space next to our studio which is still free to rent from Bow Arts Trust. The space is fantastic and we love being there quite a lot. If you are interested in renting a studio space through Bow Arts Trust then check the website: www.se1studios.com

Barcelona- Eating, Pooing, Shopping

In December 2010 we escaped the frozen UK for an equally cold yet snow-free Spain. Barcelona we found to be a magical city, full of wonder, with the people welcoming, the art inspiring, and the food delicious!

On the subject of food, Alcampo is the biggest supermarket we have ever visited! Situated near Barcelona Airport, meat is very much the order of the day.

Just look at this big ‘meat tree’ of a display!

Got the hunger? So then, on to eating-

In the bookshop La Central de Raval we chanced upon a transparent panel which afforded us with this great view of a banquet taking place below.

And after eating-

Poo in pairs inside of a box and then in an arc.

Pooo in pairs inside of a box, then in a pile, and then in an arc.

Our friends, the Artipodeans, are always on the lookout for the worst names in retails history. In a similar vein – yet this time from the hospitality industry – Hotel Colon certainly has a good/bad ring to it.

From Hotel Colon we (bowel) move on to a traditional Spanish Christmas Market with the many ‘Tio de Nadal’ (roughly “Christmas Log”).

These cheeky little logs may well look sweet

but behind the bright smiles lies a dark (brown) tale

of beating induced pooping!

So now to shopping-

Situated down a small side street in the heart of Barcelona, the shop El Ingenio is a treasure trove of fantastical costumes, toys and games.

Upon entering, rows upon rows of gurning faces loom down from every wall.

Chasing the next bargain can be very ‘cat and mouse’!

WEAPONS! WEAPONS! WEAPONS!

We can take ‘anything of these’ in our check-in luggage?!

At dusk we chanced upon this enchanting Lilliputian diorama.

To the left – on the raised platform built in to the model hillside – stood a full-size dining area for full-size people to eat full size meals amongst the tiny folk.

Thank you Barcelona for a lovely time!

And a very Merry Christmas one and all!

‘Are You Ready For TV?’ at MACBA

In December 2010 PEPOMO visited MACBA (Museau d’Art Contemporani De Barcelona) as part of our research for the forthcoming project PITV (Propeller Island Television). The main focus of our study was the project ‘Are You Ready For TV?’ which runs at MACBA from 5th November 2010 to 25th April 2011.

Through installations in the gallery and a series of related activities which include a public-access TV station, ‘Are You Ready For TV?’ explores the aesthetic and public space that contemporary art and philiosophy produce once they get shown on television. Arists and philosophers whose programs for TV feature include: Martha Rosler, Jean Luc-Goddard, David Lamelas, Guy Debord, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Richard Serra, and Andy Warhol.

One aspect which impressed us about ‘Are You Ready For TV?’ was the wealth of written material produced to complement the project. The digital publication features essays by Judith Barry, Ina Blom, Tamara Chaplin, Dora Garcia, David Lamelas, Albert Serra, and Temporary Sevices, and is available for download in PDF format from the MACBA website.

RAGWORM @ Propeller Island 7

Here’s a video of the mighty band RAGWORM performing live as part of Propeller Island 7- ‘Westward Bound’ Christmas Party, at Dogstar, London, UK on 02/12/2010.

Now RAGWORM can count Santa as a fan!

Twas the 23rd Night Before Christmas

Twas the 23rd night before Christmas and all through the Dogstar
PEPOMO (in association with Propeller Island) were throwing the ‘Westward Bound’ Christmas Party, with acts from near and far.

A giant light-box made by artist Jamie Dyson graced the stage,

whilst near the bar stood MC Santa’s grotto, built by PEPOMO elves on minimum wage!

The ‘children’ gathered round to hear MC Santa read
from Chapter 7 of Jules Verne’s Propeller Island, inspiration for the event indeed.

Twasn’t long before MC Santa had worked up a thirst,

and drank till he was almost fit to burst!

He proclaimed: “This smoking ban is just for fools!
In MC Santa’s house MC Santa makes the rules!”

Then Jonathan Trayner performed ‘Tales of the Woodland Folk – Ignorance or Terror’ in front of the throng,

followed by MC Santa who led a dance to the Hokey Cokey song!

Samantha Taylor swept in, every bit the Snow Queen,
with effects pedals making sounds from harsh through to serene.

Followed by Katharine Tolladay in her Virgin Mary guise,

who held a raffle which afforded many a prize.

Jarrod Sanderson presented a pantomime inspired by Aladdin and the Magic Lamp,

with a smoke-spewing penis, the epitome of high camp!

A genie clad in a pvc suit,

and a war-mongering Abanazar, what a brute!

Jazz singer Lauren Kinsella scatted, Alex Roth player guitar,
“Fa-la-la-la-laaaaaa la la la laaaaaaa!”

Then Ragworm rocked out hard and heavy,
to a moshing crowd high on many a bevy.

Christmas cards were handed out by Phil Wilson-Perkin,
wonder if he also had a shaving foam merkin?

Thanks to everyone who came for making PI7 totally out of sight,
“Happy Christmas to all and to all a good-night!”

A special “thank you” to:
Jamie Dyson
Jarrod Sanderson
Paul Redfearn
Jonathan Trayner

Katharine Tolladay
