Taking Stock of Stockholm at home

In February 2011 PEPOMO travelled out to Stockholm, Sweden, to take part in Supermarket 2011 Art Fair. Upon arrival Abba met us with open arms at Arlanda Airport – so too many other Swedish luminaries – as part of a ‘Welcome to our hometown’ campaign.

Ah! That’s better! This reasurring anchor-based logo emblazened on the airport toilets we took as a portent of good things to come.

And nothing says Sweden more than a Swedish flag flying from the top of a very clean building. Now if you combine the toilet anchor with the Swedish flag you get something a little bit like…

THIS! The Propeller Island Television logo which PEPOMO designed for SUPERMARKET 2011 Art Fair. More from the Art Fair to follow. But first, let’s explore Stockholm!

A sculpture entitled ‘Sobaten’ by Christian Berg, surrounded by snow, on a cold Evert Taubes Terrace, Riddarholmen, Stockholm, Sweden, February 2011. Brrrr!

Ducks, ducks, ducks, ducks, ducks, and some swans.

In the Old Town, Stockholm we found narrow buildings in bright colours. Pretty in the light of the snow.

In the Old Town, Stockholm we found bikes in bright colours. Pretty in the light of the snow.

So, to the shops of Stockholm. Which famous actor does the befezzed one remind you of? Answers not on a postcard but rather in the ‘Comments’ box please.

So, for anyone who doesn’t have a grasp of animal names in Japanese, ‘Neko’ is the word for cat. We’ll pass thanks.

What has made Hello Kitty so very chubby? Let’s take a look inside this emporium of sweet treats and find out!

Ah, of course, chocolates! Kitty has been eating chocolates. Aren’t things becoming very Americanized (including the spelling of Americanised) nowadays?

Imagine the confectionary company board meeting:
Boss: “So then Sven. The name for our new chocolate bar. Hit us with it!”
Sven: “Japp!”
Boss: “You’re taking the pee!”
Sven: “It’s funny you should say that…”

You see, you can make any word palatable just by doubling the last letter. But we guess that the ‘Plopp’ here still probably tastes like shitt.

Trompe l’oeil gift boxes floating around a svelte bear headed beauty dressed in a natty grey suit. Marcel Dzama eat your knob off!

Stare at the toy ship in the window, stare at the toy ship in the window, stare at the toy ship in the window. Now wish for it to become a real full sized ship.

Wow! It worked! Stockholm truly is ‘magical’ at night.

No smutty innuendos here.

Instead a visit to Marten Trotzigs Grande.

And the chance to squeeze oneself down Stockholms tightest passage.

An oasis at the end of a long day trekking around Stockholm. The giant tub of never-ending pasta at City Backpackers Hostel. The fuel for our work ahead with Propeller Island Television at Supermarket Art Fair 2011, Kulturhuset, Stockholm, Sweden!
